Peitto / Blank –näyttelyn pääteos oli kahdeksan metriä leveä, sekatekniikalla toteutettu Peitto-piirustus. Yleisöä pyydettiin jatkamaan piirustusta näyttelyn ajan valkoisilla liiduilla, joita oli tarjolla näyttelytilassa. Peitto leikattiin paloiksi ja jaettiin yleisölle näyttelyn lopetustilaisuudessa.
Usein yhteispiirustukset tehdään lisäämällä eri värejä toistensa päälle. Lopputulos voi olla raju värien ilotulitus. Valkoisella jatkaminen erilaista – se peittoaa piirustuksen värit herkällä ja hienovaraisella tavalla, kuin hiljalleen leijaileva lumi. Suuri piirustus peittyi hitaasti, mutta näyttelyn loppuun mennessä valkoisten liidunjäljet verhosivat värikerroksia tasaisesti. Piirustus ei kuitenkaan palautunut puhtaaksi paperiksi, vaan Peiton värit kuulsivat valkoisen läpi. Olin myös itse peittänyt esillä olleita akryylimaalauksia eri tavoin. Halusin tutkia, kuinka paljon esittävän kuvaa voi häiritä tai hajottaa ennen kuin se luiskahtaa näkemättömiin.
Näyttely oli hieno mahdollisuus monenlaiseen dialogiin yleisön kanssa. Kutsuin paikallisia koululaisryhmiä työpajoihin, joissa pohdimme peittämistä, näyttämistä ja näkemistä, sekä teimme leikkisiä piirustuksen peittämisharjoituksia. Yleisöä saapui joukolla myös Peitto-piirustuksen leikkaustilaisuuteen. Tilaisuudessa kaikki saivat valita piirustuksesta oman palansa.
Main work in the Peitto/Blank exhibition was eight meter wide, mixed media drawing called Blank. The visitors of the exhibition were invited to continue drawing with white chalk which were on tap in the space. Blank was cut in pieces and gave to the visitors in the closing of the exhibition.
Often drawings done together are made by adding colors on each other. The result can be intense firework of colors. Continuing with white is different. It covers the colors in sensitive and sensible way, like a falling snow. Large drawing was covered slowly, but by the end of the exhibition the white chalk marks formed a plane mask on the layers of colors. However the drawing did not return to blank paper since the colors of Blank were gleaming through. I had also covered the acrylic paintings exhibited in different ways. I wanted to explore how much it is possible to disturb or break an image before it slides unseen.
The exhibition was a great opportunity for many kind of dialogue with the visitors. I invited groups from local elementary schools to participate in workshops, where we pondered covering, showing and seeing as well as made playful covering exercises. Number of people also participated in closing of the exhibition, when Blank was cut in pieces. In the closing everyone may pick their own piece of Blank.
